Seasonal windows for transplanting are short for our AG area and Central Alberta Grow Zone. According to our sources and research, the Spring window (the last week in March (only if the frost is out of the ground)/mid-April to May 31 - 6 weeks) just about the time our trees are in full bud. The Fall window (roughly August 20 to October 11 (Thanksgiving) or when the snow flies, weather permitting) are the most suitable periods to transplant.
Transplanting trees in bud when the Spring window ends and before the Fall window can be stressful for the tree, may end with the tree shutting down. As a wild bird sanctuary, we honor wild migratory bird nesting times, and the migratory national and international agreements, policies and laws.
There are many environmental factors we consider for the health and longevity of our trees, and the wild migratory birds that make their home at our farm. Thus, we do not transplant trees during this time.
